The remake of The Bodyguard is moving forward with its production. Director Sam Wrench is now attached to helm the project.
Originally directed by Mick Jackson in 1992, The Bodyguard sees a secret service agent, played by Kevin Costner, take on protecting a big-name singer, played by real life singer Whitney Houston. After developing unexpected feelings, he’s forced to choose between his duty and his own attractions.
While Wrench is newly attached to direct, Hollywood Reporter, who stated that Deadline was the first to break the news, notes that there’s been no cast announcement for the leading roles as of yet. However, they also noted that Jonathan Abrams is attached to write the screenplay for the film.
One of Wrench’s biggest film achievements of recent years was the mega-success of Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour. Much like the style of The Eras Tour, most of Wrench’s current filmography includes mostly concert films.
On top of The Eras Tour, Wrench also co-directed BTS: Permission To Dance On Stage, Christmas At Graceland, as well as directing Billie Eilish: Live At The O2. Although The Bodyguard remake will be a change of pace for him, dipping into narrative features, the connection of concert movies with someone protecting a singer is very prevalent.
