To all the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man fans out there, your best luck seeing Maguire as Spider-Man again is through Spider-Man: No Way Home. Sam Raimi is not planning on making a fourth installment to the trilogy that started 20 years ago. Raimi has returned to the Marvel Cinematic Universe to direct Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
Raimi was in the development of a fourth Maguire Spider-Man film when he dropped out so Sony could instead reboot with Andrew Garfield’s The Amazing Spider-Man.
Although, Raimi did say he is “completely open” to filming Spider-Man 4 with Maguire.
“I currently don’t have any plans to make Spider-Man 4. And they’re so successful with the new Spider-Man series that I don’t know if that’s gonna happen or not,” Raimi told Screen Rant. “I haven’t pursued that.”
Tom Holland, who plays the most recent Spider-Man, is expected to come back for the fourth installment of his Spider-Man universe. No Way Home brought home nearly $1.9 billion worldwide since its December release.
“We had a deadline, and I couldn’t get the story to work on a level that I wanted it to work. I was very unhappy with Spider-Man 3, and I wanted to make Spider-Man 4 to end on a very high note, the best Spider-Man of them all,” Raimi told Vulture in 2013, two years after the planned May 2011 release date of Spider-Man 4. “But I couldn’t get the script together in time, due to my own failings, and I said to Sony, ‘I don’t want to make a movie that is less than great, so I think we shouldn’t make this picture. Go ahead with your reboot, which you’ve been planning anyway.’ And [then-Sony co-chairman] Amy Pascal said, ‘Thank you. Thank you for not wasting the studio’s money, and I appreciate your candor.'”
What would Spider-Man 4 be about now that Maguire has been to Holland’s universe? Would it be a direct sequel to number 3, or would it pick up after No Way Home? If it’s the latter, would they include Garfield or give him a third film as well? All of these are doubtful questions, but one should still consider if there is a future for Spider-man 4.
