American Beauty director Sam Mendes announced his plan to direct a series of films based on the lives of the members of The Beatles. Mendes’ production company, Neal Street Production, will develop the films with Sony Pictures Entertainment and Apple Corps Ltd.
Mendes will direct four films for this project, with each film focusing on the perspective of one band member. Neal Street Production partner Pippa Harris shared her excitement about the project and its topic to Deadline, calling it a “uniquely thrilling, and epic cinematic experience: four films, told from four different perspectives which tell a single story about the most celebrated band of all time.” She was surprised that “Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Sean Lennon, and Olivia Harrison responded with such warmth and enthusiasm” to Mendes’ pitch and credited Mendes’ “creative brilliance and powers of persuasion” for helping the idea get this far. This project marks the first time Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and the estates of John Lennon and George Harrison gave life story and music rights to a feature-length production.
Other industry heads have also shared their enthusiasm for the project and its ambitious yet fascinating premise. Apple Corps Ltd. CEO Jeff Jones, who will also serve as the project’s executive producer, expressed the company’s delight to “collaborate with Sam, Pippa, and Julie to explore each Beatle’s unique story.” Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group chairman/CEO Tom Rothman called Mendes’ proposal “culturally seismic” and is eager to break “some rules with Sam’s uniquely artistic vision.” Even Ringo Starr approved in a post on X expressing his support for the upcoming feature quartet.
No announcements have been made regarding the release dates, though with so many approving this pitch, production will undeniably begin very soon.
