According to Variety, Sacha Baron Cohen is eying role in Through The Looking Glass, the sequel to Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland (2010). Johnny Depp (The Mad Hatter), Mia Wasikowsa (Alice), and writer Linda Woolverton will return, but Tim Burton will not. Instead, James Bobin (The Muppets) will take over the director’s seat. The last time Baron Cohen and Depp appeared in the same movie was for another Burton project, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.
According to the same Variety report, should Baron Cohen accept, he will play the villain in Through The Looking Glass. The exact identity of the role, along with further information about the plot, has not been disclosed. The title of the film comes from Lewis Carrol’s sequel to Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, but given the liberties that the 2010 film took with the source material, this new film could use the book as little more than a jumping off point. It seems unlikely that Disney would change its approach for this adaptation given the $1 billion financial success of Alice in Wonderland.
Baron Cohen has worked with Bobin before on episodes of Da Ali G Show, and he has plenty of open space in his 2014 schedule to join the production of Through The Looking Glass. Disney plans to release the film on May 27, 2016.
