Pop star Sabrina Carpenter, hitmaker behind songs such as “Espresso” and “Manchild”, is going down the rabbit hole. In what is being described as a “passion project” for the musician, Carpenter will star in and produce an adaptation of the 1865 Lewis Caroll novel Alice in Wonderland for Universal Pictures. The film will be conceptualized as a movie musical with Lorene Scarfaria set to pen and direct the project. Scarfaria is most known for her work on the 2019 drama Hustlers starring Jennifer Lopez.
Carpenter will produce the project alongside Marc Platt, who is known for his production on Broadway’s Wicked musical as well as its screen adaptation. Alice in Wonderland was famously adapted by Disney twice already, first as the 1951 animated classic as well as the 2010 live-action version directed by Tim Burton, which grossed over $1 billion.
Sabrina Carpenter is hot off the success of her seventh studio album “Man’s Best Friend” which just earned several nominations at the upcoming 68th Grammy Awards, including the prestigious Album of the Year. It was previously reported that Carpenter was developing a version of Alice with Netflix back in 2020 before talks of production stalled. Carpenter allegedly came to Universal Pictures with the concept as well as a lookbook sometime last year.
Plot details as well as a release date are being kept under wraps for now, but stay tuned as the story develops.
