Per The Hollywood Reporter, Sabrina Carpenter, the star of the popular Netflix film ‘Work It,’ will produce and star in reimagined version of ‘Alice In Wonderland’ simply titled ‘Alice’ for the popular streaming service.
The film will be reimagined to modern times, with Wonderland, not as a mystical other world, but as a music festival. It is yet unknown how each wonderfully odd character from the Lewis Carroll classic books will feature, if any, in this reimagining, but it is an intriguing idea for sure.
The last attempts at wonderland left critics and audiences somewhat disappointed. The first film, directed by Tim Burton and starring Mia Wasikowska and Johnny Depp was very successful garning over one billion dollars at the box office and enough to warrant a sequel. Though the sequel made almost twice its budget, the lackluster response most likely puts that franchise to rest.
Now Carpenter and company look to reinvigorate Wonderland with a contemporary twist. The script is penned by musician and writer Ross Evans. A director has yet to be named.
The 21-year old Sabrina Carpenter is quickly rising through the industry with stand out performances in Netflix’s ‘Tall Girl’ and ‘Work It.’ In addition to that she has also started her own production company, At Last Productions, and will be a producer on ‘Alice.’ This will be a huge opportunity for her to show her acting chops, but also her musical skill, as she is also a musician.
No release date for a return to Wonderland is set.
