Netflix has a huge feature film on their hands as the company has greenlit the project entitled Red Notice for a 2020 release. According to Deadline, Red Notice will be directed and written by Rawson Marshall Thurber and feature a marquee cast of Dwayne Johnson, Gal Gabot and most recently acquired Ryan Reynolds. Initially intended to be distributed by Universal Pictures, Netflix won a bidding war for the pitch and became the winner.
Red Notice was reportedly one of the biggest film projects acquired by Netflix last year which included a $20 million salary for Johnson and a eight-figure deal for Thurber. Adding Gabot and Reynolds presented a huge challenge for the studio as instead of a breakeven gross against an upfront salary, Netflix agreed to pay the upfront salaries and buy out the backend. The production budget of the film will range to $130 million and is expected to generate a franchise with the intention of sequels and spinoffs. The film is reportedly an action heist comedy.
Red Notice will be produced by Beau Flynn through his FlynnPictureCo. venture alongside Dany Garcia, Johnson and Hiram Garcia. Scott Sheldon will serve as the film’s executive producer who previously worked with Johnson on Rampage and Skyscraper.
