One of the most popular video games of the 1980s is receiving a film adaptation, as Netflix is making a live-action adaptation of the classic Don Bluth-animated arcade game Dragon’s Lair. Ryan Reynolds is currently in negotiations to star and produce, according to Deadline.
Roy Lee of It Chapter Two will be tasked with producing through his Vertigo Entertainment banner, alongside Trevor Engelson, Gary Goldman, Jon Pomeroy and the legendary animator himself: Don Bluth. Daniel and Kevin Hageman, best known for their writing contributions on Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark and The Croods 2, will be compiling the screenplay.
Dragon’s Lair saw its debut on the arcade scene in 1983 and was developed by Rick Dyer and Don Bluth. The game’s story follows the misadventures of a knight named Dirk the Daring who journeys to rescue the lovely Princess Daphne from a vicious dragon named Singe and an evil wizard known as Mordroc. Following its arcade release, the game inspired an oft-forgotten eponymous ABC animated series that continued the adventures of Dirk the Daring. It ran from 1984 to 1985.
Reynolds is currently the star of a Michael Bay-helmed action thriller on Netflix entitled 6 Underground, and will also be seen in Red Notice, which will also available on Netflix. However, production for the film is currently stalled due to the coronavirus.
