A trailer has been released for the horror-comedy The Voices starring Ryan Reynolds and Anna Kendrick. The film follows Jerry (Reynolds), a wide-eyed man who hears murderous direction from his cat and benevolent advice from his dog. Things get complicated when he develops a relationship with a co-worker (Kendrick).
The movie was acquired by Lionsgate and was directed by Marjane Satrapi, who is best known for directing the adaptation of her graphic novel Persepolis. The Voices is her second directorial effort not based on her material. She seems to be a fan of mixing genres in unusual ways, as in 2013 when she helmed The Gang of the Jotas, a crime-comedy surrounding a luggage mix-up at the airport.
The trailer for The Voices sets the film’s darkly comedic tone, including the words from his cat Whiskers and his dog Bosco, both voiced by Reynolds along with other animals in the film.
Reynolds is slowly making his way back into the spotlight, which includes returning to the comic sensibilities that first garnered him attention in Van Wilder: Party Liaison (2002). He’s set to return to one of his past roles with Marvel’s Deadpool, which will embrace the more comedic tone that made that character standout in the comics.
