In the most classic Deadpool way possible, actor Ryan Reynolds crashed the X-Men original cast’s reunion Zoom call, with Sophie Turner and James McAvoy also joining in. The call also saw the appearance of longtime Wolverine actor Hugh Jackman, Halle Berry (Storm), Patrick Stewart (Professor X), and Famke Janssen (Jean Grey). The group reunited to participate in Global Citizen’s Global Goal: Unite For Our Future, which celebrates the heroic acts of everyday superheroes, including healthcare and other essential workers, during the event on Saturday, June 27.
Berry, Stewart, and Janssen all starred in the original X-Men trilogy in 2000, 2003, and 2006 while McAvoy and Turner are part of the newer generation that began with X-Men: First Class.
In the sketch, Jackman opened up the reunion call saying: “It’s kind of surreal guys — can you believe it’s been 20 years since the first X-Men movie?”
At some point, Reynolds then popped in the Zoom chat. Jackman proceeded to tell him: “The cast and I were just reminiscing about the movie that we were all in together.”
In the call, Reynolds highlighted his own experiences as a former X-Men star. In 2009, he appeared alongside Jackman in Origins as Weapon X/Deadpool. The actor then introduced Turner and McAvoy, who starred as younger versions of Jean Grey and Professor X respectively in the prequel movies, including last year’s X-Men: Dark Phoenix.
The reunion was awkward in the best possible way. Turner joked: “I actually thought that this was a ‘Game of Thrones’ reunion.” For context, Turner also played Sansa Stark in HBO’s Game of Thrones series.
Just as fast as they arrived in the call, the stars quickly left the Zoom chat. Those who remained were a disgruntled Jackman and Reynolds, who joked: “You know what that makes this a reunion for?”
Soon after, the chat was joined by Liev Schreiber, who played Sabretooth in Origins, commenting, “X-Men: Origins,’ reunite! Yeah.”
