The weekend took off with Ryan Gosling leading the box office with Project Hail Mary scoring 80.6 million for the domestic box office with a 141 million total including the overseas market for the best MPA launch of a film for 2026. Following a science teacher who wakes up with amnesia on a spacecraft discovering he is tasked with preventing terrible disaster from striking the Earth this film has managed to appeal to both younger and older audiences despite the Sci-Fi genre usually under performing. Project Hail Mary manage to shake off the stigma most sci-fi films suffer from with its balance of action, intrigue, and not this week probably next week friendship between man and rock alien thing.
Hoppers landed in second this week again but sadly underperformed from its original estimates of 20 million only snagging 18 million in its third week it still has been performing modestly well for an animated family film and will likely bounce back once it has a streaming release as most Disney Pixar films have had in the last few years.
Bollywood broke a record with a limited domestic release for Dhurandhar: The Revenge which snagged a near 10 million from American theaters. Following closely behind in fourth Ready or Not 2 in it’s opening weeks snagging 9.1 million performing slightly under. The sequel boost not providing enough of a difference for audiences to consider enticing enough new venture after multiple well performing horror and slasher films over the last few months, probably contributing to genre burnout which does not play well in the film’s favor.
Rounding out the top five is Colleen Hoover’s latest theatrical venture Reminders of Him which took home 8 million in its second week vastly performing under the previous two Hoover films and only a sliver of the now notorious It Ends With Us the breakout adaptation for the author.
Scream 7 came in sixth place this week with 4.3 million. After a slow four weeks only totaling $114.5 million screeching to a hold after breaking the franchise opening weekend record.
Seventh place went to Goat, with 3.5 million in it’s 6 weeks still keeping families in theaters despite the stiff competition from Hoppers.
This is followed by new indie horror from A24 Undertone which brought home 3 million in its second week. Undertone follows two paranormal investigators analyzing audio files that they suspect to be haunted.
In ninth place with 1.5 million came the Pout Pout Fish film and it’s opening week. Great job Pout Pout Fish.
Rounding out the top 10 is MET Opera Tristan and Isolde in the opening week with 1.5 million as a special live stream of the Met Gala.
