It seems as though Sinners fans are already thirsty for more. Hot off the enormous success that is his fifth feature film, the action/horror flick Sinners felt different after the previous major franchise entries helmed by Coogler, which include Creed, Black Panther, and its sequel Wakanda Forever. Reasonably, Coogler wanted to take a different approach when conceiving Sinners, telling Ebony Magazine, “I’ve been in a space of making franchise films for a bit, so I wanted to get away from that,” He told the publication. “I was looking forward to working on a film that felt original and personal to me and had an appetite for delivering something to audiences that was original and unique.”
Unfortunately for fans of the vampire thriller, this may also be the reason Sinners doesn’t get a sequel. “I wanted the movie to feel like a full meal: your appetizers, starters, entrees and desserts, I wanted all of it there,” Coogler said. “I wanted it to be a holistic and finished thing. That was how I was asked all about it. That was always my intention.”
Crossing $350 million globally and landing within the top 10 highest-grossing films of the year, Sinners comes as a rarity in the modern age of filmmaking, an entirely original IP with no plans to expand into franchise territory. Fans of the high-energy, Michael B. Jordan starrer will just have to wait and see what auteur Ryan Coogler decides to cook up next.
