‘Rust’ Trailer Premieres Years After Fatal Production Incident

Rust, the controversial film that stars Alec Baldwin, released its first trailer. The movie was filmed in 2021 in New Mexico where Baldwin was holding the gun that shot and killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.

NPR has reported that Hannah Gutierrez-Reed,  the armorer on the set of the film, is currently “serving an 18-month prison sentence for involuntary manslaughter after she was convicted last April.” Gutierrez-Reed was in charge of the guns on set, and there was a live round in the weapon that killed Hutchins.

In 2021 Baldwin had an interview with ABC where he said ‘that he had ‘no idea’ how a live bullet got onto the set, but that he ‘didn’t pull the trigger’ on the firearm that killed Hutchins.” Then in 2022 a forensic report showed that “the gun used in the fatal shooting could not have been fired without pulling the trigger. Baldwin’s attorney pushed back on the report at the time, saying in a statement that the gun was faulty, and that ‘the FBI was unable to fire the gun in any prior test, even when pulling the trigger, because it was in such poor condition.” The manslaughter case against Baldwin was eventually dismissed and he did not serve any jail time.

Following the shooting, production for the film halted. But then in April 2023 filming resumed and Hutchins’ husband took on the role of executive producer. Both her husband, Matthew Hutchins, and her son will receive profits from the film, according to CNN. The director, Joel Souza was also shot in the incident but recovered and continued as director.

Rust will premiere in theaters as well as VOD on May 2.
