Russell Crowe and Aisling Franciosi will play the titled characters in Rothko. The film is set to be directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson with screenplay by Lara Wood. The story follows Kate Rothko(Franciosi) and her legal battle over her father’s abstract artwork and subsequently the legacy of the painter. Mark Rothko will be played by Russell Crowe.
The film, which was recently announced on the last day of the European Film Market, will also star Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Jared Harris. Rothko certainly has an exciting cast of well established actors and an up and coming actor in Aisling Franciosi playing more or less the lead role. Stuhlbarg and Harris are some of the best character actors around and will certainly bring a lot to either of their roles, no matter the size. Taylor-Johnson on the other hand will also be on board as a producer, alongside his directing wife.
Rothko will be an adaptation of The Legacy Of Mark Rothko by Lee Seldes, which was published all the way back in the 70’s, a few years after Mark Rothko’s death.
Sam Taylor-Johnson had this to say about the legacy of the artist and what she expects out of this movie: “Rothko is not just a movie about the great artist, but rather a timeless story about right versus wrong. It’s Kate Rothko’s journey to protect the seminal paintings from the corrupt men who betrayed her father and stole his art; it is a reckoning with men in positions of power who try everything to destroy her father’s legacy.”
Certainly an interesting and unique film about an artist. There is no set release date or production date for the film. However, it is one to be on the look out for in the future.
