Russell Brand Documentary to Open SXSW

The documentary Brand: A Second Coming, featuring a behind-the-scenes look at actor and comedian Russell Brand, will open the 2015 South by Southwest Film Conference and Festival. The film follows Brand’s career from a drug addict to a movie star.

The documentary is directed by Ondi Timoner, who won the Sundance Grand Jury Prize for both her 2004 music documentary Dig! and the 2009 documentary We Live in Public. Brand hasn’t had the most success as of late – his last big release was the rock ‘n’ roll musical Rock of Ages and he also starred in the little-seen Diablo Cody directorial debut Paradise. Lately, he’s been known more for his extreme political statements.

The full lineup for SXSW hasn’t been officially announced, but some other titles playing the festival include the comedy Hello, My Name is Doris and The Invitation. The documentary A Brave Heart: The Lizzie Velasquez Story will also show at the festival. The full list will be announced February 3. The film portion of the festival will run March 13 – March 21.

Tyler Lyon: When Tyler isn't thinking about the lack of a Canadian presence in D2: The Mighty Ducks, whether Princess Leia can now be considered a Disney Princess or discovering 8-bit classics on his 3DS, he's cheering on the Cubs, Bulls, Bears, Blackhawks, and Hawkeyes.
