Spike Lee’s newest film, Highest 2 Lowest, has finally made its way to audiences. Now that viewers have gotten a hold of it, the Rotten Tomatoes score has debuted as well, reinforcing the positive response of the film.
Functioning as a retelling of Akira Kurosawa’s High And Low, Highest 2 Lowest follows a titan of the music industry living in New York. When he finds himself in the center of a ransom demand for someone he holds dear, he has to put everything on the line to get them back, including his own life.
Highest 2 Lowest sports a cast led by iconic actor Denzel Washington, including supporting roles from Oscar nominee Jeffrey Wright, and famed rapper A$AP Rocky. Washington and Lee have worked together several times before, including both 1992’s Malcolm X, where Washington plays the titular role, as well as collaborating on 2006’s Training Day.
On Rotten Tomatoes, Highest 2 Lowest has a certified fresh critic score of 90% out of 121 reviews, as of this writing. Collider notes that the film has a similarly high audience score of 87%, pulling from an aggregate of over 100 reviews.
Collider notes that this is the second theatrical run for a film this year from Apple. The first for them was F1 at the beginning of the summer, but Highest 2 Lowest has A24 on board to help with its theater rollout.
