Rooster Teeth Film ‘Lazer Team’ Breaks Crowdfunding Records

On June 6, 2014 posted its latest project, and first ever live-action, feature-length film, Lazer Team on the crowdfunding site IndiegogoIn less than ten hours, the project met its goal of $650,ooo. According to a press release, the project broke Indiegogo’s record for the fastest to reach $700,000. As of writing Lazer Team has raised over $1,100,000 making it the second highest funded film project – after (the so far titled) Gosnell Movie – on Indiegogo, and the tenth highest project on the site over all.

You may not be too surprised by this feat if you’re familiar with Rooster Teeth’s popularity and legacy. They produce new content; videos published on their official youtube page regularly garner over 100,000 views – and that’s not counting their official site; one of their latest webseries,Japanese-animation-esque RWBY, had anywhere between 500,000 and 2,000,000 views. They produce their own podcast and host their own convention, RTX – the latest was held July 4, 2014.

Rooster Teeth’s Flagship Series, ‘Red vs. Blue’

Then there’s one of Rooster Teeth’s earliest creations, Red vs. Blue. One the most famous machinima – essentially videos created by recording people playing video games and using the characters as puppets – and longest running web series of all time, Red vs. Blue has been running since 2003, with 241 episodes spread over eleven seasons and has received almost unanimous critical praise .

So, what’s Lazer Team about? According to the Indiegogo page:

In the late 1970’s, the Search For Extraterrestrial Intelligence project received a one time signal from outer space. It looked exactly as theorists thought a communication from an alien civilization would — unfortunately it has never been decoded. Or so we were told. Unbeknownst to the general public the signal was translated and told us two things:

  1. We are not alone.
  2. The galaxy is a dangerous place.

Our story is live action sci-fi comedy that takes place decades later in the aftermath of this event.

Fans of their web series know the people at Rooster Teeth – such as company co-founder and head writer for Red vs. Blue Burnie Burns – have a knack for storytelling and humor, so Lazer Team‘s premise seems write up their alley.

Stay tuned for more about Lazer Team in the future.
