Oscar nominee Rooney Mara (Carol) has been cast to star in Brady Corbet’s Vox Lux. The film will be a drama spanning 15 years of of a young pop star’s rise to fame. Beginning in 1999 and ending at the present year, the story will follow Celeste (Mara) as she rises to fame after a national tragedy and continues through the ups and downs of her career as the audience experiences the cultural evolution of the 21st century through her heightened perspective.
Being produced by Killer Films and Zero Entertainment, the project is looking to start filming in February and will be shot on 65mm film and then presented on 70mm.
Corbet, known by some for his indie acting career (he has appeared in several heavy dramas such as Melancholia, Martha Marcy May Marlene, Funny Games, Clouds of Sils Maria, and Thirteen), released his first directorial feature last year with The Childhood of a Leader, which starred Robert Pattinson (Twilight). It will be interesting to see if the heavy subject matter tackled within his acting career will also translate to this picture and his future work.
Mara appeared in three films that premiered this past month at the Toronto International Film Festival, those being Una, Lion starring Dev Patel (Slumdog Millionaire), and The Secret Scripture. Mara has received lot of positive buzz from Una, in which she stars with Riz Ahmed (Nightcrawler). Next, she will be filming Mary Magdalene, and with this new role in Vox Lux, she looks to further prove her inexhaustible range.
