According to an exclusive by Deadline, Kate Winslet (Titanic, The Reader), Diane Keaton (The Godfather, Annie Hall), and Mia Wasikowska (Alice in Wonderland, Crimson Peak) will star in the drama Blackbird, the remake of Bille August’s Danish film Silent Heart, directed by Roger Mitchell (Notting Hill, My Cousin Rachel).
Millennium Films will produce, and the original movie’s screenwriter Christian Torpe will still be in charge of the script.
The film follows a terminally ill mother, Lily (Keaton), who brings her family together for one last weekend before she takes her own life. Winslet and Waikowsa are set to play the daughters of Lily.
Silent Heart was released in 2014 and starred Ghita Nørby, Morten Grunwald, Paprika Steen, and Jens Albinus. In the Dutch film, the mother suffers specifically from ALS and ponders the thought of getting euthanasia at the end of the family weekend with the aid of her husband. However, the decision becomes more and more difficult for the daughters to handle, and old conflicts emerge. We can only imagine that the Americanized version of the film will follow a relatively similar plot.
Shooting for Blackbird is planned to begin in August in London.
