After making the December hit Nosferatu, Robert Eggers is bringing gloom to Christmas once again as he is to write and direct a feature adaptation of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol.
According to Deadline, Warner Bros. has the project under development with Eggers at the helm, and will produce alongside Maiden Voyage’s Chris Columbus and Eleanor Columbus. Although there is no confirmation of any specific castings yet, there are rumors that Eggers is writing the Ebenezer Scrooge adaptation role for his three-time collaborator Willem Dafoe. Eggers and Dafoe have previously worked together on 2019’s The Lighthouse, 2022’s The Northman, and the previously mentioned Nosferatu.
A Christmas Carol has already had numerous adaptations over the almost two centuries since it was published. Films like 1988’s Scrooged, a comedic take on the story starring Bill Murray, or the 2010 animated feature retelling with Ebenezer voiced by Jim Carrey. It will be interesting to see Eggers’ horror take on the already spooky ghost tale; Eggers certainly has the visual style to pull it off. As seen in his biggest box office and critical hit, Nosferatu, which gained $181 million worldwide and four Academy Award nominations in the categories of cinematography, production design, costume design, and makeup and hairstyling.
Before Eggers retells the change of Scrooge’s fate, he is to shoot the Focus Features film Werwulf later on this year.
