Robert Downey Jr. surprised fans at the Marvel SDCC panel as he appeared on stage after they announced he would be playing Victor von Doom in the new Avengers: Doomsday. This roles marks RDJ’s return to the franchise not as beloved superhero Iron Man, but introducing a new villain to the Avengers series. The film will be directed by Marvel legends, the Russo brothers, who confirmed their return at the same panel.
RDJ said “new mask, same task”, referencing his old role as Iron Man in the MCU. He also said he likes “playing complicated characters”.
