Going into its third year, Roadmap Writing will host Black to the Future, a week-long celebration event of Black History Month and bringing awareness to diversity in the entertainment writing industry. Roadmap Writing is an education platform that can help “people looking for a guided path to professional success writing for film and TV,” according to their official About page on their website.
During Black to the Future, it will have all online Zoom panels featuring industry-working screenwriters and executives, according to the event’s official page. Some of these panelists include Mika Frank (The Resident), Angela Harvey (Teen Wolf), Natasha M. Hall (Virgin River), Aadip Desai (The Goldbergs), and Shakesha Williams (founder of Harlem Fusion Studios), according to Deadline.
Roadmap Writing has continued to hold spaces for Black Screenwriters since 2016 after launching their Diversity Fellowship. Another upcoming opportunity for underrepresented identities is the quarterly Coletta Preacely-Garcia Diversity fellowship on Feb. 15.
From this fellowship, two individuals will be sponsored and take the Career Writer Program from Roadmap Writing. So far, over 380 individuals have obtained literary representation to start their screenwriting careers, according to Deadline.
In an industry that has seen a lack of diversity when it comes to writing some of our favorite films and TV shows, it is inspiring to see companies like Roadmap Writers making sure that all voices from all backgrounds can be heard.
