‘Road House’ Remake Becomes Amazon Prime’s Largest Streaming Film Debut

Jake Gyllenhaal’s new film, a remake of 1989’s Road House, released on Amazon Prime Video on March 21. According to Amazon, by way of The Hollywood Reporter, the buzzy film from Amazon MGM Studios has received 50 million views since its premiere.

Amazon, like most streaming giants, rarely reveals viewership numbers. It is currently unclear what Amazon considers a view. Does one view mean one completed watchthrough of the film? Just a quick click? Other streaming giants, like Netflix and Disney+, calculate their viewership by dividing the film or episode’s total runtime by the total number of viewers. Perhaps this is how Amazon calculated their Road House viewership?

Jennifer Salke, the boss of Amazon MGM Studios said, “The groundbreaking, successful debut of Road House is a testament to the hard work and commitment from the entire Road House filmmaking team and the film’s cast led by the phenomenal Jake Gyllenhaal…It’s great to see the film taking off with both fans of the iconic original as well as a huge turnout from new audiences.”

Despite its success, the Road House remake has been the subject of a few controversies. In addition to director Doug Liman threatening to skip the film’s premiere due to its streaming debut, the writer of the original film sued Amazon over alleged copyright threat and AI use

But it seems that despite these setbacks, Road House is not slowing down.
