Golden Globe-winning Boyhood director Richard Linklater is currently in discussions to direct The Rosie Project, with Jennifer Lawrence already locked in to star, according to Deadline.
The story follows a socially awkward genetics professor who crafts a scientifically sound survey to find his perfect mate—i.e. filtering out the alcoholics, slackers, or other generally unlikable figures. All seems to be going well until he meets and falls for Rosie (Lawrence) who is the exact opposite of his carefully crafted type.
The film is based on the Graeme Simison novel of the same name and has been adapted for the screen by 500 Days of Summer and John Green (The Fault in Our Stars, Paper Towns ) novel adapters Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber. This screenwriting duo is quickly becoming Hollywood’s go-to for young romantic fare and could add a solid foundation to the big names attached to the project.
Ever since his 12-year passion project took critics and audiences by surprise last year, Linklater has been hot on moviegoers’ radar, putting a lot of pressure on his follow-up projects. A film with an actress like Lawrence, who is currently one of cinema’s sweethearts, could likely be a great move. If the deal goes through, this will be Linklater’s second film following his Oscar-nominated movie Boyhood. The first is a Dazed and Confused-esque college baseball film titled Everybody Wants Some that Paramount will release on April 16, 2016.
