Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick Return to Write ‘Deadpool 3’

Comicbook has reported on the confirmed writers for Deadpool 3. Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, the writers involved in the first two Deadpool films, will continue their work in Deadpool 3. Reese and Wernick are best known for Zombieland, which is thematically similar to Deadpool as both are comedic interpretations of otherwise serious genres. The two writers expressed how much they love to work with Ryan Reynolds, star of the Deadpool franchise. Reynolds worked on writing Deadpool 2 with Reese and Wernick, and is involved in the writing of the third film as well.

Deadpool 3 will have a wider range of possible MCU characters because of Disney’s acquisition of Fox in 2019. The first two Deadpool movies premiered before this acquisition, and were much more limited in terms of licensed characters. A comedy franchise like Deadpool can make use of MCU characters not only to progress the story, but for comic relief as well. Reese mentioned the “world of villains” in regard to the MCU, mentioning how they have access to MCU villains in the writing of the third film. Spider-Man: No Way Home crossovers in Marvel-related films made this aspect much more prevalent.

Deadpool 3 will be directed by Shawn Levy, known for Free Guy and The Adam Project, which both star Reynolds. The release date of Deadpool 3 is currently unconfirmed.

Jackson Fanelli: I am currently pursuing my masters degree in Creative Writing from Full Sail University. My life passions revolve around artistic expression through both writing and acting. I was introduced to the arts through acting in musicals and plays. I hope to pursue screenwriting for television. I have an interest in studying the arts and what interests audiences which has led me to writing about films at MXDWN.
