The feature adaptation of John Robert Brown’s 13: The Musical may still be in the earlier stages of production at Netflix, but the casting news is still coming out in full force. It was revealed that Rhea Perlman, Josh Peck and Peter Hermann would be rounding out the cast of the upcoming musical (via Deadline).
The story of 13: The Musical follows 12-year-old Evan Goldman as he moves from New York City to small-town Indiana and grapples with the divorce of his parents as he prepares for his upcoming Bar Mitzvah and navigates the complicated social circles of his new school. Perlman will play Grandma Ruth, Peck will play Rabbi Shapiro, and Hermann will play Joel Goldman.
13: The Musical is being directed by Tamra Davis with an adapted script from Tony Winner Robert Horn. The rest of the sizeable cast includes Debra Messing, Luke Islam, JD McCrary, Aidan Vissers, Lindsey Blackwell, Frankie McNellis, Eli Golden, Nolen Dubuc, Ramon Reed, Nolen Dubuc, Kihlya Aynne, Shechinah Mpumlwana, Gabriella Uhl, Kate Roman, Jonathan Lengel, Wyatt Moss, Liam Wignall and Kayleigh Cerezo. The original production of 13: The Musical was a hit on Broadway and notably starred Elizabeth Gillies and pop-star Ariana Grande, who both went on to star in Nickelodeon’s show Victorious.
A release date still hasn’t been announced for the new adaptation, but it’s expected to land on Netflix sometime in 2022.
