Once more the Sith will rule the galaxy, and now they may even rule the box office. The re-release of Star Wars: Episode III- Revenge Of The Sith, commemorating the films 20th anniversary, has hit theaters and already made quite a splash at the box office.
As the Clone Wars rage through the galaxy, Jedi knights Anakin Skywalker and Obi Wan Kenobi are dispatched to rescue the Supreme Chancellor after the core of the Republic was laid under siege. But what the two don’t realize is that the ending to the war draws closer than they suspect, with the evil Darth Sidious plotting the return of the Sith and the downfall of the Jedi, with Anakin caught right in the middle.
Celebrating 20 years since its initial release, Revenge Of The Sith brought home a sizable profit in its Thursday showings. On Thursday alone, the film managed to draw $3.4 million, which put it on the track for roughly $20 to $23 million. However, the film managed to surpass those estimates with $25 million come Sunday’s close, according to BoxOfficeMojo.
Hollywood Reporter notes that the numbers for Revenge Of The Sith far exceeded that of some of the most recent re-releases from a galaxy far far away. When Return Of The Jedi came back in 2023 for its 40th anniversary, it took home around $5 million, and with Phantom Menace returning last year for its 25th anniversary, the numbers went further up when it made $8.7 million.
In Thursday showing, the film even managed to overtake new release The Accountant 2. The sequel to the 2016 film took in $2.5 million on Thursday, which includes figures from the “tax day” previews. Even with the modest numbers, however, it went on to come in underneath Revenge Of The Sith at the box office this weekend.
However, Revenge Of The Sith was unable to overtake Sinners, the reigning box office champ, when that made Thursday numbers of $6 million.
