Retro Video Games Come To Life in ‘Pixels’ Trailer

Universal has released a new trailer for the upcoming action comedy Pixels starring Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Josh Gad, Michelle Monaghan, and Peter Dinklage. The movie follows three retro video game champions (Sandler, Gad, and Dinklage) who are recruited by the President of the United States (James) to fight off an alien invasion that uses classic video game characters as the means for our destruction.

The characters featured in the trailer include Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, and aliens from Galaga and Centipede, all of which were included in a series of posters released last December. Paddles from Araknoid also make brief appearance. The animation uses a unique style highlighting the pixels that make up the characters. The movie is based on a short film by Patrick Jean that showcased the animation style.

Along with the special effects, the movie highlights the fun the Chris Columbus movie will have with the beloved video games of old. The most notable is a cameo from Pac-Man creator Toru Iwatani, who appears at the end of the trailer along with Mini Coopers named after the game’s ghost characters. The movie is the latest blockbuster with video game influences, after Wreck-It Ralph (2012) and  Scott Pilgrim vs. The World (2010).

Pixels is set for release July 24, 2015. Check out the trailer below.
