Just when you thought Alice didn’t live here anymore, director Paul W.S. Anderson told a Chinese crowd during the Beijing Film Festival that a Resident Evil 6 was on the horizon, saying that he was heading out (from Beijing) to “start writing Resident Evil.” Fast forward to 1:12 for the Resident Evil bit:
Series star Milla Jovovich has already all but confirmed she’ll be back for the next movie last June. It doesn’t hurt that she’s married to Anderson, either.
Anderson went on to say he’s also hoping to bring back Li Bingbing (Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, The Forbidden Kingdom) to reprise her role as Ana Wong.
A 2015 release could be problematic for the video game-based franchise, as 2015 is already chock full of more profitable (domestically) franchises. Films like The Avengers: Age of Ultron, Fast & Furious 7, Jurassic World, Terminator: Genesis, and a little things called Star Wars are all due out in 2015, these just a few of the numerous high profile releases set to oppose a franchise which has never had domestic box offices numbers over $100 million.
One interesting thing to note is Resident Evil‘s success in the international markets. Perhaps that will be where Alice and her band of T-Virus friend will make up their money. Hopefully a boost in quality will follow, or they’ll just allow the cheese to flow like the blood does and keep it in it’s niche over-the-top style. One thing is certain: they’ll keep milking this cow as long as it’s profitable.
