Writer-director Rodrigo Garcia’s Last Days in the Desert, with Ewan McGregor (Beauty and the Beast) portraying both Jesus and the Devil, is set for a May 13 release, according to Variety.
The film, which premiered earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival, also stars Tye Sheridan (Joe), Ciarán Hinds (Hitman: Agent 47), and Ayelet Zurer (Man of Steel). Garcia has re-imagined the biblical story of Jesus struggling with temptation during his forty days of fasting in the desert as a battle between Jesus and the Devil over the fate of a family (Sheridan, Hinds and Zurer).
The film was shot by two-time Academy Award winning cinematographer Emmanuel “Chivo” Lubezki, (Gravity, Birdman). Garcia and Lubezki previously teamed on Things You Can Tell Just by Looking at Her, which was awarded Un Certain Regard at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival.
Producers are Bonnie Curtis and Julie Lynn of Mockingbird Pictures and Wicks Walker of Division Films.
Broad Green will release the film through “cinema-on-demand” distributor Tugg, the first time the two companies have partnered on a release following Broad Green’s investment in Tugg last year. Specialty marketing agency Different Drummer will also assist.
