Academy-Award-winning actress Regina King will be sitting in the director’s chair and make her directorial debut with One Night In Miami, according to Deadline.
With production set to commence in New Orleans today, the film will shoulder an impressive cast consisting of The OA’s Kingsley Ben-Adir as renowned Civil Rights activist Malcolm X, Eli Goree (Riverdale) as Cassius Clay prior to becoming heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali, Aldis Hodge (Clemency) as prolific running back Jim Brown, and Grammy/Tony Award-winning musician Leslie Odom, Jr., coming off the heels of Harriet, portraying singer Sam Cooke.
Kemp Powers will be writing the film’s script ,which is adapted from his own Olivier-nominated production. The film takes place on the evening of February 25, 1964, following the troubled Cassius Clay in the aftermath of his intense match-up with former heavyweight champion Sonny Liston. Unable to celebrate his victory at a hotel on Miami Beach due to Jim Crow, Clay spends his triumph at Hampton House Motel alongside the company of his friends Malcolm X, Sam Cooke, and Jim Brown.
Originally written in 2013, the play details the meeting of four black celebrities and examines their friendship. Jess Wu Calder and Jeith Calder of Snoot Entertainment will be producing the film alongside King.
