Producer of National Treasure, Jerry Bruckheimer (Top Gun, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl), confirmed that a third installment in the series is in the works. The news was revealed at the Producer’s Guild Awards, also known as PGA.
Bruckheimer commented to The Direct that the third film is “coming along quite well” and how a handful of writers and producers are “working on the script for it.”
National Treasure released on November 19, 2004 and was directed by Jon Turtletaub (The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, While You Were Sleeping). The action-adventure film stars Nicholas Cage (Longlegs, Ghost Rider), Diane Kruger (Troy, Inglourious Basterds), Justin Bartha (The Hangover, Failure to Launch), Jon Voight (Holes, Mission: Impossible), Sean Bean (Game of Thrones, Robin Hood) and Harvey Keitel (Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction). The film centers around Cage’s character, Ben Gates, going on an adventure to find a specific item that reveals the history of the United States.
National Treasure 3 has been anticipated after the sequel National Treasure: Book of Secrets premiered on December 21, 2007. In 2022, a spinoff series titled National Treasure: Edge of History was officially launched on Disney+. The series was cancelled in April 2023, as stated by Deadline.
Thirteen months after the cancellation, Bruckheimer revealed that screenwriter Ted Elliot (The Lone Ranger, Godzilla) is apart of the writing team for National Treasure 3. Bruckheimer also eluded to The Wrap that production was coming, stating, “we’re getting closer.” His hope was to have Cage and Turtletaub working on the film together despite being in different departments.
The franchise has seen its fair share of challenges, from the low views on the Disney+ to Cage’s disinterest comment in 2024 per Screenrant. However, the recent statement should get fans excited for the new film that is progressing to fit Bruckheimer’s vision.
