Australian actress Rebel Wilson, known for her hilarious acting in Pitch Perfect and Bachelorette, will take on another similarly humorous role in the third movie of the Twentieth Century Fox’s Night at the Museum series. She will be joining the all-star ensemble cast with Ben Stiller and Robin Williams, both returning from the two previous ventures into the world of exhibits that come alive when museums close.
For anyone new to Night at the Museum, the series is a family comedy about a security guard named Larry (Ben Stiller) who works at the American Museum of Natural History and interacts with the the museum exhibits, which come to life at night via a magical Egyptian tablet housed there. He eventually must stop several former guards from stealing the tablet, thereby preserving the “lives” of his nocturnal friends, all while dealing with the antics of exhibits like Attila the Hun, a T-Rex skeleton, and a mischievous monkey. In the second film, Larry, now a business owner, goes to the Smithsonian Institute in Washington D.C. (where most of the exhibits have been moved, including the Egyptian tablet), evading Jonah Hill as a suspicious night time security guard while trying to foil the plot of a collection of museum villains including Napoleon, Ivan the Terrible, and Al Capone.
According to reports, Night at the Museum 3 will see Wilson playing a night time security guard at the British museum where the story is set. Rumors are that this role is very similar to Jonah Hill’s comedic security guard role in Night at the Museum 2, though perhaps in a more plot-significant capacity.
Details on the plot are still fairly scarce as we approach next month’s start to production on Night at the Museum 3, but it has been revealed that Dan Stevens (Downton Abbey) will be playing Sir Lancelot, reputed to be the villain this time around. We’ll keep updating with the newest tidbits on Night at the Museum 3, which is due to release this Christmas.
