People probably weren’t expecting a film based on the card-game UNO, nor were they expecting rapper Lil Yachty to be involved, but it seems that Hollywood is full of surprises. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lil Yachty is set to produce and possibly star in an upcoming adaptation based on the Mattel Game.
“UNO is a game that transcends generations and cultures,” said Mattel executive Robbie Brenner. “We look forwards to partnering with Lil Yachty, as well as with Coach K and Brian Sher, to transform the classic UNO game into a comedic action-adventure.”
The film is being described as an action-comedy heist movie set in Atlanta’s underground hip-hop culture. It’s probably not exactly what audiences would expect from a feature-length project based on a card game, but then again, in recent years, we’ve seen a few films based around traditional games that took similar liberties, including Game Night, which starred Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams. There are also other board game films currently in development including the Rubik’s Cube film and Risk.
“I played UNO as a kid and still do today,” Lil Yachty said. “So to spin that into a movie based on the Atlanta hip hop scene I came out of is really special. It hits close to home for me.”
If the rapper ends up starring in the film, it wouldn’t be his first role. He voiced Green Lantern in Teen Titans Go! To The Movies, and starred in Life-Size 2 and How High 2.
