‘Queer’ And Its Remarkable Box Office Numbers

Title for Luca Guadagnino's 'Queer'

The film Queer, directed by Luca Guadagnino, had a limited release in just seven theaters this weekend. It brought in a total of $190,000 this weekend, giving it a remarkable per-theater average of $27,000. This is the second-best per-theater average of the weekend, only coming in behind Moana 2, the number-one movie in the country, which delivered a per-theater average of $32,000. Queer’s numbers also mean that it performed better than the record-breaking Wicked on a per-theater average basis.

Over the more extended Thanksgiving period, Queer earned a total of $300,000. While this is a solid number, it does fall short of other films like Anora and Asteroid City, which earned a per-theater average of $90,000 and $142,000, respectively.

Queer stars Daniel Craig, Daan de Wit, and Jason Schwartzman. It is based on a novel by William S. Burroughs. It takes place in the 1950s and follows an expat who becomes infatuated with a young man in Mexico City.

Queer opened with mostly positive reviews and sits at 77% on Rotten Tomatoes as certified fresh. A critic’s consensus reads: “A phantasmagorical distillation of William S. Burroughs’ preoccupations that’s by turns meandering and vital, Queer marks one of Daniel Craig’s most sterling performances yet.”
