Steven Spielberg’s long-awaited adaptation of Roald Dahl’s The BFG has just hit theaters. But unsurprisingly, the director has no shortage of upcoming work. He’s already lined up multiple projects for the next few years, all of which are pretty unique from one another. Probably the biggest of them is the adaptation of Ernest Cline’s acclaimed novel Ready Player One, set to hit theaters in 2018. The film already has a huge cast lined up and may be a nice return to form for the director of his early sci-fi days. And even though Spielberg has a period epic still awaiting production for a 2017 release date, Ready Player One has now begun filming.
The novel tells a fascinating story during the year 2044. Its dystopian world has a large group of the population playing a virtual world game known as OASIS. The game allows the players to solve puzzles associated with the creator’s obsessions of past pop culture, with the focus being the 1980s. This type of tale seems ideal for the director, especially with having the superb cast along for the ride. Having just starred in Spielberg’s Bridge of Spies and The BFG, actor Mark Rylance will take on the role of the game’s mysterious creator. Beside him will be rising star Tye Sheridan (X-Men: Apocalypse), playing the protagonist named Wade Watts.
While no other details were fully revealed about the film, the news of the production beginning came from the official Twitter page of co-wrtier Zak Penn; he happily announced that the first week of production had just wrapped. And after this news, it’s exciting to think about what we could get next. It’s not at all unlikely that some enticing set photos could be released after more filming has been done. We will keep you updated as more information becomes available.
Ready Player One hits U.S. theaters on March 30, 2018.
