A hot item on the auction market has found a new home with Universal as an auction involving fierce competitors Legendary, Sony, and Amazon Studios came to an end. Mindy Kaling and Priyanka Chopra are set to star in this as-of-yet untitled comedy for Universal that takes place in both India and America. The film is said to be along the lines of Crazy Rich Asians and My Big Fat Greek Wedding, both of which are beloved romantic comedies, and will involve the romance of a wedding with the drama of family culture clash.
Kaling will be writing the script with Brooklyn Nine-Nine co-creator Dan Goor. He is also producing alongside Howard Klein, producer of Late Night and The Office. Kaling has the option to direct but has not yet been confirmed in the role, though it is already clear she will be a major lead in the project in many roles.
This is another project in a line of successes for Kaling, whose film Late Night broke records at Sundance and releases in June with a $13 million deal with Amazon. She will be adapting Four Weddings and a Funeral for MGM Television and Hulu.
