In 2001, director Steven Soderbergh revived the classic Ocean’s franchise with his installment of Ocean’s 11, featuring an impeccable ensemble cast. The film’s success led to two sequels, Ocean’s 12 and Ocean’s 13 plus a spinoff, Ocean’s 8. Recently, George Clooney, star of the recent trilogy, teased that another installment to the Ocean’s franchise might be coming soon. However, as reported by The Playlist, even if there is a new addition to the franchise with Clooney, Soderberg isn’t interested in being a part of it: “[George Clooney and producing partner Grant Heslov] did engage Soderberg again, a while ago, to see if he was interested, and the intel suggests that he didn’t even want to read a script — politely, to keep himself out of the mix.”
However, it isn’t a surprise that the director isn’t interested in making this return because he made comments 15 years ago upon Bernie Mac’s passing. Soderbergh told MTV in 2008, “With Bernie Mac being gone, I don’t think any of us would want to return to that.”
While an Ocean’s 14 might not be confirmed as of yet, there is confirmation of a prequel to Ocean’s 11. The prequel will star Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie as Danny Ocean’s parents. Director Jay Roach talked to the Associated Press about his plans for the new film: “The Monaco Grand Prix is the backdrop and there’s a big famous shipping magnate who has a yacht…It’s not inexpensive. And I wanted it to be old-fashioned. Margot brought it to me as a kind of old-fashioned epic love story slash adventure disguised as a heist. It is a heist movie still, but it’s very much a love story. And we were both inspired by Hitchcock, To Catch a Thief but also Notorious. It just wants to be a big, big, you know, cinematic spectacle.”
