ThatHashtagShow.Com reveals that Paramount Pictures is in talks to reboot the G.I. Joe series similarly to the handling of the Transformers franchise. After the overwhelming success of Bumblebee, the solo film that focuses on the famed character, the new movie for the G.I. Joe franchise will reportedly focus on ninja character Snake Eyes. The previous two G.I. Joe movies under-performed in terms of box office revenue and critical reception, despite some A-list cast members including Dwayne Johnson and Channing Tatum.
But with a clean slate and a clear goal for the next installment, Paramount could have a successful reboot on their hands. ThatHashtagShow.Com announces that the film will most likely follow Snake Eyes from his origins as a street fighter in Peru to training in Japan with the Arashikage Clan, with promises of plenty of drama and fighting. They also discuss that Ray Park (Star Wars: Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace, X-Men), who played Snake Eyes in the previous G.I. Joe films, will most likely not be returning for the stand-alone film as there will be a need for a much younger actor for the role.
There is also word that the director of the film will be Robert Schwentke, who has directed Red, Insurgent, Allegiant and R.I.P.D. Thus far there is no sign of who the screenwriter might be or who will even star in the film. ThatHashtagShow.Com does note that the cast for the film will mostly be made up of Asian actors, as the majority of Snake Eyes’ training will be centered in Japan, and they state that casting will begin in early 2019.
Despite there being little to no news about the film, it will be interesting to see how Paramount reboots this franchise by delving into the past. Bumblebee managed to successfully reboot a flagging series, though the Transformers movies have always remained in the current culture, even if the associations haven’t always been positive. Though the G.I. Joe brand may not be as recognizable as it once was, if the Snake Eyes film has a good director and a focused script, it could bring the brand back to its former glory.
