Producer Aaron Magnani recently picked up the film rights to G.P. Ching’s young-adult book series Soulkeepers. The six book series was published from 2011 to March of 2014. Magnani’s only credit so far is producer for Iron Doors, a 2010 German film about a man trapped in locked room.
The Soulkeepers series follows Jacob, a teenager who witnesses a war between Heaven and Hell over human souls. Jacob has the power to fight off Fallen Angels looking for souls. He uses this power to search for his mother, who mysteriously vanished without a trace. Along the way he enlists the help of his neighbor, Dr. Abigail Silva, and other Soulkeepers who share his gift. In addition to Heaven and Hell, the plot summaries for the books mention God and Lucifer.
Harry Potter, Twilight, and The Hunger Games have all demonstrated that successful YA book series can translate into huge box office successes, but dozens of B-list properties from Percy Jackson to Divergent have failed to match that standard. It is possible that the market simply cannot handle more than one property at a time – The Hunger Games came out the same year as the final Twilight film. If Soulkeepers aims for a release after 2015 the timing would be perfect to become the next big thing.
