When the beloved character Popeye emerged into the public domain, many pounced on the opportunity for a horror-themed adaptation of the popular 1930s cartoon. Both Popeye’s Revenge and Popeye the Slayer Man have been announced, but now, a third film has thrown its hat into the ring, titled Shiver Me Timbers.
This take on the sailor man also prefers to refer to him as a “Slayer Man” and leans more towards horror-comedy than straightforward horror. A trailer for the film has just been released, and it is easy to tell that this film is aware of its ridiculous premise while fully embracing it.
In a fun twist, the presumed final girl in this film is Olive Oyl. In the original cartoon, she is often portrayed as the sailor’s girlfriend, but in this adaptation, she is reimagined as a soon-to-be college student on a trip to see Haley’s Comet with her peers. This fun trip turns into a nightmare when a comet crashes to earth and warps Popeye into the Slayer Man.
The trailer leans into an ’80s aesthetic and is filled with all the tropes that would get a character in a horror film killed, such as drugs or sex. The gory events that follow are sure to get audiences excited.
Shiver Me Timbers is directed by Paul Stephen Mann and produced by Mann, Keith Montgomery, and Alastair Statham. The cast includes Anthony Greer, Paul Dewdney, Brendan Nelson, Stephen Corrall, and Amy Mackie.
Shiver Me Timbers is set for an April premiere in theaters. You can check out the trailer below.
