Fox’s latest X-Men spinoff Gambit has suffered many losses within the last couple of years. Both Doug Liman and Rupert Wyatt were attached to the project at different point and both dropped out all while star Channing Tatum has remained dedicated to the film’s development. It now appears that a new face is being brought on to the movie in Pirates of the Caribbean originator Gore Verbinski, according to Deadline.
If he sticks, he’ll be directing Tatum as the New Orleans mutant with the abilities to turn objects into deadly projectiles — his signature being a deck of cards. The character was once played by Taylor Kitsch in a X-Men Origins: Wolverine cameo. Now, Tatum and Fox hope to bring the smooth talking Remy LeBeau to true life. In order to do so, the film will need to finally make it past its development stages.
Verbinski, while known primarily for his work on Pirates of the Caribbean, was also the director on The Ring, The Weather Man, Rango, The Lone Ranger, and most recently A Cure for Wellness. Thus far, Verbinski has maintained a balance of big budget projects and smaller, darker indie films, making him an exciting choice moving forward.
