LEGO Movie scribes Phil Lord and Chris Miller are in talks to direct the new Ghostbusters 3, Cinema Blend reports. After the death of Harold Ramis, Ivan Reitman opted out of directing the film, but Sony executives have remained strongly committed to its development and hope to begin filming by January of 2015.
As demonstrated by their ability with LEGO Movie and 21 Jump Street, Lord and Miller seem the most qualified to find inspiration from the stuff of their youth. Although the duo is currently working on 22 Jump Street (opening in June), there would likely be a time pressure to reformulate a Ghostbuster script, and begin both production and casting.
That being said, Etan Cohen and Dan Akyroyd’s script for Ghostbusters 3 has been enthusiastically embraced. According to The Wire, Rietman declared, “I kept pushing forward on the Etan Cohen [script] and we now have a draft that is very good, that the studio is very excited about… It’s a version of Ghostbusters that has the orginals in a very minor role.”
Reitman (well known for directing Ghostbusters, Ghosbusters II, and No Strings Attached) will still be involved as a producer for Ghostbusters 3, and there may be a brief appearance by Bill Murray. Reitman’s newest Draft Day stars Jennifer Garner and Kevin Cosner, and will be released next month. As a producer of Ghostbusters 3, Reitman is “determined to retain the spirit of the original film.”
Even if you do not belive in UFOs, astral projections, mental telepathy, ESP, clairvoyance, spirit photography, telekinetic movement, full trance mediums, the Loch Ness monster or the theory of Atlantis, the third installment of this classic series could be a scream.
