PGA Nominations Include a ‘Deadpool’ Surprise

Nominations arrived this morning for the 2017 Producers Guild Awards (PGA) for the year’s best achievement in motion pictures, as decided upon by producers. The PGA is a fairly important guild too. Typically, their choices are fairly well aligned with the eventual Best Picture slate at the Oscars – with the caveat that PGA nominates an even 10 films per year versus the 5-10 nominated at the Oscars. Their eventual winners typically align as well – particularly in recent years as both the PGA and the Oscar’s Best Picture category are measured similarly (last year was a strange year when PGA picked Adam McKay’s The Big Short as their winner while the Oscars selected Tom McCarthy’s Spotlight).

This year’s slate includes many of the key awards favorites including frontrunner La La Land and hopeful spoilers Manchester by the Sea and Moonlight. The big surprise of this year’s line-up is undoubtedly the inclusion of Deadpool, Fox’s blockbuster origin tale of the titular (and anarchic) superhero played by Ryan Reynolds, himself nominated this morning as a producer of the film. The question, inevitably, may be if this heavily R-rated comic book adaptation could possibly find favor with the Academy. With two Golden Globe nominations and a Writer’s Guild nomination before this morning’s announcement, Deadpool – strange as it is to say – is looking stronger than expected.
