Following the disappointing opening weekend box office of Supergirl, Peter Safran, the Co-Chairman and Co-CEO of DC Studios, has provided a statement. The statement is as follows:
“While Supergirl didn’t meet our box office expectations, it’s just one component of a broader, long-term strategy at DC Studios that we remain confident in.”
The statement comes as Supergirl underperformed significantly in its opening weekend at the box office. Domestically, the film made $38 million, while internationally it made $50 million, for a total worldwide opening weekend of approximately $80 million. While a decent sum, the film’s estimated $170 million budget poses a difficult financial hurdle in subsequent weekends, since most films need to make about 2.5 times their budget to break even, given other outside costs like marketing and the theater’s cut of ticket sales. Supergirl’s opening weekend performance also follows the decent performance of the previous DC Studios release, last year’s Superman, whichgrossede approximately $618worldwidey.
While disappointing, Safran’s statement makes it clear that DC Studios doesn’t see Supergirl’s box-office performance as a major hurdle to its current plans. Their next release, Clayface, due out in theaters in October, has a much more modest estimated budget of around $80 million.
Supergirl is currently playing in theaters.
