Peter Chelsom Picked to Direct ‘The Mirror Thief’ Adaptation

You got to give Hollywood credit: they really know how to get their hands on a written property for adaptation pretty damn quickly. The Mirror Thief has only been on sale for a matter of months and already the rights to make it into a movie have been bought, complete with a director to head the project. According to sources at Deadline, British director Peter Chelsom (The Space Between Us, The Mighty) has been hired to write and direct the latest book to film adaptation, the former to be done alongside Tinker Lindsay, with whom he has partnered with in the past.

The Mirror Thief follows the lives of three men living in separate time periods: Crivano, a 16th-century Venice alchemist, Stanley Glass, a teenaged con artist, and Curtis Stone, a world-weary Marine veteran. Despite the enormous gap in time and location between the three men, they are all connected by the writings of a book written by fictional author Adrian Welles. A book based around Crivano and sought after by Glass, who is in turn sought after by Stone. Moving between 16th century Venice, a seedy 1950’s Venice Beach waterfront, and a Venetian casino in modern day Las Vegas, the lives of these men are intertwined, all because of a book about a mirror.

This book definitely seems like something that would make for an interesting movie concept, but as for how well it will do in theaters remains to be seen. At the most I’m just hoping that the director that they picked will be able to pull through, as Peter Chelsom’s more recent films haven’t been the most well received by critics. However, with his most recent film The Space Between Us premiering this December, perhaps we will get to see if Chelsom can prove himself to be the right choice for the job.
