Penelope Cruz is going to test her comedic chops against the world’s most ridiculously good-looking male model in Zoolander 2, according to Deadline. The rumored Bond Girl is the first cast member for the sequel who didn’t appear in the 2001 original. Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, and Will Ferrell will return to the roles of Derek Zoolander, Hansel, and Mugatu, respectively.
It’s unclear whether Cruz will replace Christine Taylor as Stiller’s love interest in the new film. Taylor hasn’t been announced as a cast member as of yet. Cruz hasn’t been in an American comedy since 2012, when she was part of the ensemble cast in Woody Allen’s To Rome With Love. In 2013, she was in the comedy I’m So Excited, the most recent film from Pedro Almodovar.
Justin Theroux, who is best known for his roles in 2000’s American Psycho and David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive, will write and direct the film. Theroux’s only other directing credit is the romantic comedy Dedication, which coincidentally starred Taylor. He’s also directing and co-writing the upcoming Will Ferrell and Steve Carell comedy Swear To God. Theroux played the “Evil DJ” in the first film.
No release date has been announced yet for Zoolander 2. We’ll have more on the film as it develops.
