Paul Haggis (Crash) is looking to take on the Amazon with Mark Bailey’s (Last Days In Vietnam) script The Last Of The Tribe, based on the book by Monte Reel. While many jungle stories today seem to be trying to return to the Indiana Jones days or recreate The Jungle Book, this tale takes a different turn, toward the true story of a one-man tribe in the Amazon looking to survive.
Within the Amazon, there are still indigenous tribes that remain unknown. Though their lands are constantly being encroached upon, certain lands are protected as sanctuaries for these tribes. According to the Brazilian constitution, the land is still protected even if it is inhabited by only one surviving tribe member. In 1996, when the sole survivor portrayed in the film was found, he was immediately in danger. Though his land became protected, plenty of developers thought he was in the way. The story follows the three men who came together in the jungle to protect this man, though apparently sometimes against his will. Up against the elements, the man himself, ranchers, businessmen, and politicians, these three fought through it all to protect this last survivor of an unknown tribe.
The Last of the Tribe takes a look at one of the few corners of the Earth that have not yet been fully explored. With a modern take on adventure and ethics, The Last Of The Tribe promises to be a true adventure as the last member of a tribe fights to survive the modern-day influences on the Amazon.
