Even though it has a July 2016 release date, not much information has given about Paul Greengrass‘ upcoming Jason Bourne. The sequel is apparently continuing where the series left off with The Bourne Ultimatum (2007) rather than the Jeremy Renner spinoff The Bourne Legacy (2012). The sequel will bring back Matt Damon, and the fore-mentioned director who helmed the last two films of the original trilogy. There’s only been TV spot so far, which aired during the Super Bowl. Hopefully sometime soon a full-length trailer will come out, as well as some new plot details.
Greengrass recently spoke to EW about the upcoming project, particularly noting the intense preparation that Damon is giving, both physically and towards the script. Because this will technically mark as the fifth installment, there’s many ways that a movie like this could fall flat, but the director seemed passionate and excited about what audiences may be in for. In discussing Damon’s work, he stated:
He’s been in the shadows of Europe. He’s been active and he’s been doing hard physical work. Definitely not sunning himself on the beach.
It’s reassuring to hear that the star is all-in for the sequel; the actor had mentioned when Jason Bourne was rumored to be in development, that he wasn’t too interested in continuing with the character, but Greengrass (Captain Phillips) coming on-board seemed to change his mind. The director also said that he and Damon truly are happy and intensely confident about what the new film will bring.
You don’t make a movie unless you’re 1000 percent committed to make the best movie we can, and you don’t make this kind of movie unless you think it can be a worthy successor to the other movies we made. That phenomenal Jason Bourne shape was a segment of intent.
The film also stars Tommy Lee Jones and recent Oscar-winner Alicia Vikander, although there’s been very little revealed about their roles. One of the more intriguing aspects is how the film will tie-in to the political world, as the past films have done. In an interview with Buzzfeed while Damon promoted The Martian, he said Jason Bourne will be in the “post-[Edward] Snowden world.”
With that type of element being worked into the plot should make for more than just a mere action blockbusters. It’s definitely in good hands with the veteran director and star, so fans should be anticipating a fast-paced, intelligent, and spectacular watch this summer.
