We recently reported on a new comedy in the works, written and starring Mindy Kaling, the television star of The Mindy Project and The Office. The upcoming film, currently without title, reportedly centers on the world of late-night talk show hosts and 2-time Oscar winner Emma Thompson (Saving Mr. Banks) is attached to co-star. Today, per Variety, talks appear to be surfacing that Paul Feig (Bridesmaids) may direct the Fox 2000 project.
There may be something to this for multiple reasons. Firstly, Feig has established a strong career out of helming comedies featuring strong women. Since the 2011 blockbuster Bridesmaids (which broke gender barrier in the R-rated comedy game as well as earned two Oscar nominations, a rarity for the genre), Feig has directed The Heat, Spy and this year’s estrogenized reboot of Ghostbusters. Secondly, Feig has also cultivated strong relationship with Fox; the studio distributed both The Heat and Spy as well as The Peanuts Movie, which Feig served as a producer. No deal has been made official as of yet, but if talks prove fruitful, he will likely produce this project as well – reportedly he was enamored with Kaling’s screenplay.
Kaling, meanwhile, has a burst of intriguing projects in the pipeline. The voice of Disgust in last year’s Oscar-winning Pixar blockbuster Inside Out, is set to appear in Ava DuVernay’s A Wrinkle in Time, which has just started production, as well as co-star in Gary Ross’ upcoming Ocean’s Eight.
